Silicon carbide commonly known as emery, chemical formula SiC, colorless crystal, containing impurities when blue black. The structure is similar to diamond, with each silicon atom surrounded by four carbon atoms and each carbon atom surrounded by four silicon atoms, forming "megamolecules". The hardness is second only to diamond, the density is 3.217 g/cm 3, and the melting point is about 2700 degree (decomposition sublimation). The chemical properties are stable, and it does not react with chlorine, oxygen, sulfur, and strong acids at high temperatures, but can react with bases.
